COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Veteran Trauma Court is officially opening in Colorado Springs to help veterans who may be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder or other war injury and get in trouble with the law.

The court would be similar to other veterans’ courts established across the country, including ones in Buffalo, N.Y., Anchorage, Alaska, Orange County, Calif., and Tulsa, Okla. In those courts, veterans accused of crimes receive reduced sentences or dismissal of charges if they comply with terms of their plea agreement, which may include seeking treatment.

El Paso County officials plan a news conference Thursday afternoon to announce the official opening of the court, which is a five year project that expects to help some 1,500 veterans.
