VANCOUVER — When goaltender Ryan Miller pulls on his red, white and blue sweater for Team USA, there is an “S” right in the middle of the chest.
He has been Superman in the Americans’ quest for gold at the Olympic hockey tournament. The United States is undefeated heading into today’s semifinal match against Finland largely because Miller has allowed only five goals in four games. To a man, his teammates say the lone reason they upset Canada in pool play is because their goalie stole the game.
Miller, however, is as mild-mannered as Clark Kent. He’s not acrobatic or arrogant, and has been like that since he was a kid in a hockey-loving family.
“My dad always told me: ‘Sports Illustrated isn’t here taking pictures, just make the glove save and move on,’ ” Miller said Thursday.
As for the “S” on his chest where pucks seem to hit the perfectly positioned Miller time and again, this rail-thin goalie jokes it’s the one part of his body that isn’t weak.
