The race to fill the vacancy in the City Council seat representing northwest Denver is becoming a crowded field, with two other candidates jumping in, one with labor ties and the other the son of Denver Councilwoman Peggy Lehmann.

Susan Shepherd, who worked as a political organizer for the Denver Area Labor Federation from 2005 to 2007, announced her candidacy for the District 1 council seat in a news release.

Jon Lehmann, a lawyer specializing in environmental law, confirmed he intends to run too. He plans a formal announcement soon.

The council seat representing northwest Denver has become vacant because former Councilman Rick Garcia left to become a regional director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. A special all-mail ballot election is scheduled for May 4.

The other declared candidates: state Sen. Paula Sandoval, a Democrat; Denver police Detective John Haney; lawyer Kenneth Padilla; Georgia Sigala, who works for a nonprofit organization as an early-intervention services coordinator; and Larry Ambrose, a neighborhood activist.
