JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tiger Woods is back home after a week of family counseling in Arizona and is trying to get back into a routine that includes fitness and his first significant practice in 15 weeks, a person with knowledge of his schedule said Tuesday.
Woods returned to his home near Orlando, Fla., on Saturday and has been hitting balls on the range at Isleworth, not far from where he ran his SUV into a fire hydrant and a tree in a middle-of-the-night accident Nov. 27 that set off shocking revelations of infidelity.
The person said golf’s No. 1 player still has not decided when he will return to competition.
• John Daly has been suspended five times and cited 21 times for not giving his best effort, according to a 456-page rap sheet kept by the PGA Tour that is now public record because of libel lawsuit Daly failed to win.
Smithsonian rejects Simpson suit
LOS ANGELES — The Smithsonian Institution, America’s repository of historical artifacts in Washington, rejected O.J. Simpson‘s “acquittal suit” from the 1995 murder of his ex-wife and her friend as inappropriate for its collection.
The museum’s snub came the morning after a California judge approved the donation as the solution to a 13-year court battle over the carefully tailored tan suit, white shirt and yellow and tan tie.
Chelios, 48, signs with Thrashers
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Thrashers signed Chris Chelios, a three- time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman who has spent the season with the AHL Chicago Wolves. Chelios, 48, is expected to remain with the Wolves for now.
• The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired wing Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward Luca Caputi and former Avs defenseman Martin Skoula.
• New York Rangers forward Marian Gaborik is out because of an unspecified lower-body injury.
• Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ray Emery needs season-ending surgery to repair his right hip.
Pro Bowl to precede Super Bowl
HONOLULU — The Pro Bowl will be played before the Super Bowl when it returns to Honolulu next year. The game will be at Aloha Stadium on Jan. 30, the Sunday before the Super Bowl in Arlington, Texas.
• The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed wide receiver Troy Williamson, hoping he can fill the void left by Torry Holt‘s departure. Williamson earned a starting role last year before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 2.
