Violent crime continues to plague students of the Auraria Campus as a college student and his friend were robbed at knifepoint and beaten with brass knuckles.

The attacked happened at about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday as the pair left campus and were beaten and robbed a short distance away at a Circle K Store at West Colfax Avenue and Mariposa Street, according to the Auraria Police Department.

The victims were at the Colfax at Auraria RTD Light Rail Station when they were approached by two men who started a “verbal confrontation,” police said.

The student and friend left the campus, crossed Colfax Avenue and were followed by the two men who robbed them at knifepoint in front of the store.

“Both victims were struck multiple times with brass knuckles,” police said.

The suspects fled east on Colfax with cash and personal property.

Paramedics from Denver Health Medical Center checked on both victims at the scene and they declined further treatment, police said.

On suspect used a “butterfly knife” and the other used the brass knuckles in the assaults and robberies.

Before Wednesday night’s incident there had been four assaults on students, on or near campus, since Feb. 16.

Campus security and administrators held a town hall meeting earlier in the day Wednesday to alert students about incidents and to try to rally the campus community to take protective measures.

At the meeting campus police urged students to call them about suspicious or criminal incidents. They also advised students to buddy-up with others and to be aware of their surroundings.
