GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, German — Lindsey Vonn crashed and bruised her right knee during the World Cup giant slalom Thursday, but is expected to compete in today’s super-G in an attempt to win her third consecutive overall title.

“I’m going to race (today),” Vonn said. “I’m not going to back down from this, and at this point, I’m used to fighting through pain.”

With two races remaining in the season, the Vail skier leads Maria Riesch of Germany by 165 points. A victory is worth 100 points.

Olympic silver medalist Tina Maze of Slovenia won the final giant slalom race of the season, and Kathrin Hoelzl of Germany clinched the World Cup title in the event by finishing second.

Erik Guay of Canada produced a daring run to vault from third to first in the final World Cup super- G standings. Austrian Michael Walchhofer, who led the event going into the race, finished 15th and second overall in the discipline.

• Two-time Olympian Scott Macartney retired from ski racing after a 12-year career with the U.S. team. Macartney, a speed specialist, started 98 World Cup races in his career and had two podium finishes.

Emil Jonsson of Sweden won a men’s 1.2-kilometer cross country World Cup sprint, with American Andrew Newell placing third two seconds back in Drammen, Norway.

MLS players vote to strike

NEW YORK — Major League Soccer players voted to strike if a new labor contract isn’t agreed upon before the season opener March 25.

• American forward Charlie Davies, recovering from a one-vehicle accident Oct. 13 in Virginia, said he expects to resume training by late March and hopes to make the U.S. World Cup roster, which appears to be a long shot.

Henry Wittenberg, an amateur wrestler who went undefeated for more than 300 matches and won a gold medal at the 1948 London Olympics, died Tuesday at his home in Somers, N.Y. He was 91.

• Russian gymnast Kristina Goryunova received a one-year doping ban that will also keep her out of the 2012 London Olympics.

Dallas Seavey, the 23-year-old son of 2004 winner Mitch Seavey, was the first to reach Cripple — winning $3,000 in placer gold nuggets in the process — and leads the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska.
