DORAL, Fla. — Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel are tied for the lead going into the final round at the CA Championship that now has a distinctive South African flavor.
Els lost some of his momentum but not the lead Saturday at Doral, wasting some good birdie chances in his round of 2-under 70.
Schwartzel made three big par putts and finished off a 5-under 67. They wound up tied for the lead at 12-under 204 and gave this World Golf Championship an all-South African final pairing.
• Chad Collins chipped in for eagle on the par-5 second hole to top the Puerto Rico Open leaderboard at 9-under before second-round play was suspended because of darkness in the rain-delayed PGA Tour event in Rio Grande.
• Four-time champion Karrie Webb shot a bogey-free 3-under 70 to take a one-stroke lead in the Women’s Australian Open in Melbourne.
Rachel Alexandra defeated
NEW ORLEANS — Rachel Alexandra was beaten by Zenyatta’s stable-mate, Zardana, in the $200,000 New Orleans Ladies at the Fair Grounds Race Course.
Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 horse of the year after going 8-0 as a 3-year-old, was racing for the first time in more than six months in what was expected to be a warm-up for her showdown with Zenyatta at the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn on April 9.
• Zenyatta made a successful return to the races, winning the $250,000 Santa Margarita Handicap at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., by 1 1/4 lengths and extending her career victory streak to 15-0.
• Sidney’s Candy led all the way in winning the $150,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita by a half- length, sending 3-year-old rival Caracortado to his first loss in six races.
• Lookin At Lucky closed strong to win the $300,000 Rebel Stakes by a head at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark.
• Odysseus rallied from between horses in deep stretch to win the $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby in Oldsmar, Fla.
Wotherspoon is calling it quits
TORONTO — Canadian speedskater Jeremy Wotherspoon, who holds the 500-meter world record and has won 67 World Cup races, more than any other male skater, retired.
• Magnus Moan anchored Norway to victory in a nordic combined World Cup team event, overtaking Austria’s Mario Stecher on the final leg of the cross country race in Oslo.
The U.S. team, which included Steamboat Springs’ Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane, finished fifth.
