DENVER—A late winter storm is bringing snow and cold that canceled classes for several Colorado school districts and prompted Denver to open three emergency shelters for the homeless.

In the mountains, the National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings through 6 a.m. Saturday for cities including Crested Butte, Aspen and Vail, with up to 18 inches of snow possible before it’s all over.

Snow also was falling along the Front Range on Friday.
