The Douglas County school board announced Friday that Elizabeth Celania-Fagen is the sole finalist for the position of superintendent of the Douglas County district. The announcement that there was just one finalist was made at a special board meeting in Castle Rock.
Celania-Fagen currently is the superintendent of the Tucson Unified School District in Arizona. She has led the district for two years.
Jim Christen sen recently stepped down as the Douglas County district’s superintendent, and Steve Herzog has been interim superintendent.
Celania-Fagen has “the skills to advance the district for years to come, and we are very excited to share this great news with our district and our community,” Dan Gerken, who led the superintendent search process, said in a news release.
The Tucson Unified School District has 56,000 students in 105 schools and 10,000 staff. Celania-Fagen trimmed $40 million from the district’s 2010 budget.
“I am excited about the opportunity both personally and professionally,” she said in the district’s release.
Her assistant told the Highlands Ranch Herald not to expect a comment Friday because the “very pregnant” Celania-Fagen was in the hospital.
