NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to meet with federal investigators probing a Canadian physician Friday, The New York Times reported on its website.
The meeting is expected to take place in Buffalo, N.Y., the paper said Monday night. Rodriguez has said he intends to cooperate.
Dr. Anthony Galea said during a March 8 interview he treated the Yankees third baseman last year and prescribed anti-inflammatories but never gave him or any other athlete human growth hormone.
Other major-leaguers, including the Mets’ Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran, have been contacted by federal investigators about Galea.
Rockies closer Huston Street has said investigators might want to talk to him about the case.
Pujols has exam, shot for back
JUPITER, Fla. — Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols got an anti-inflammatory shot for tightness in his back and is expected to be out of action for the next couple of days.
“He received an MRI today and then an injection to put him over the hump, make him feel better,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. “He’s day to day. We’ll see how he feels on Wednesday.”
Mariners’ Lee to play catch
PEORIA, Ariz. — Mariners pitcher Cliff Lee will play catch today, then be re-evaluated as he recovers from a lower right abdominal strain.
Mariners head trainer Rick Griffin said the former AL Cy Young Award winner was scheduled to do rehabilitation in a swimming pool later in the day.
Another Mariners pitcher, Erik Bedard, had hoped to throw off a mound today, but that was called off. Griffin said Bedard (shoulder) is not yet ready and that long toss and throwing off flat ground will continue to be part of the left- hander’s rehabilitation process.
Footnotes.
Dodgers manager Joe Torre is suspending talks on a contract extension, saying he doesn’t want it to become a distraction with opening day so soon.
• Phillies closer Brad Lidge, who underwent offseason surgery on his right knee and right elbow, said his goal is to be ready by April 10, the first day he would be eligible to come off the disabled list. He allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work against Pirates minor-leaguers Monday.
• Right-hander Shaun Marcum will be Toronto’s opening-day starter.
