DOW walleye operation opens.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife’s annual walleye spawn-taking operation is underway. Anglers are asked to observe the closures around the netting locations near the dams of Chatfield, Cherry Creek and Pueblo reservoirs. The effort likely will be extended to Aurora and Carter reservoirs during the next few weeks; closures there will be posted accordingly.

Walleyes do not reproduce naturally to a significant extent in Colorado and populations must be replenished through the DOW’s hatchery system. Fertilized walleye eggs are taken to a hatchery and incubated. Some are used to create saugeyes — walleye-sauger hybrids — and surplus eggs may be used in trades with other states. Newly hatched walleyes and saugeyes are stocked into designated waters within a matter of weeks and grow to size there.

The DOW hopes to collect 90 million to 95 million walleye eggs by mid-April.

License renewals.

Anglers are reminded that their current fishing licenses expire March 31. New licenses are available at DOW offices and other license outlets across the state.
