GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—Add Glenwood Springs to the list of cities wooing Google.

Google says that since it announced in February that it planned to test an ultrahigh-speed broadband network in one or more trial locations, thousands of citizens have nominated their communities. The deadline to express interest was Thursday.

Mayor Bruce Christensen says Glenwood Springs would be a good choice because it has a fiber-optic “backbone” in place, its own electric company with the right of way and conduit needed to install a new system, and legal authority to install and expand a fiber-optic network.

The city’s existing network delivers speeds of 100 megabits per second. Voters in 2008 consented to the city pursuing an expansion.
