Ahead of its season-opener Friday, the Rapids on Thursday traded mainstay Nick LaBrocca to Toronto in exchange for top draft pick Marvell Wynne, the team said.

The Rapids also gave up a third-round pick in the 2011 MLS draft.

Wynne, a defender, has three caps with the U.S. national team and was on the American roster at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He was the No. 1 draft choice of New York in the 2006 MLS draft.

In 96 career MLS games, Wynne has two goals and 13 assists.

LaBrocca, since 2008, led the Rapids in games-played and minutes-played. In 61 games (57 starts) he scored four goals. The midfielder was a draft choice of Colorado’s in 2007, 35th overall.

Wynne will join the team before Friday’s season-opening game, against Chivas USA at 8:30 p.m. in Southern California. Wynne’s father, also named Marvell Wynne, is a former center fielder for the Pirates, Padres and Cubs of Major League Baseball.

In the past three months, the Rapids and Toronto have become common trade partners, completing three deals. The Rapids also acquired allocation money and a third-round pick in two separate trades that sent Ty Harden and Jacob Peterson to the Canadian club.
