Seven tons of hay caught fire Monday on a flatbed truck near C-470 just north of the Morrison Road exit.
West Metro Fire Protection District firefighters extinguished the blaze initially, but after front loaders were brought in to unload the burned hay from the trailer, it reignited from being exposed to fresh air, requiring another dousing.
Water had to be trucked to the firefighting equipment because of a lack of hydrants in the rural area.
Three engines, a ladder truck and an ambulance responded to the scene, said Cindy Matthews, fire district spokeswoman. No injuries were reported.
The truck was carrying 45 bales of hay, about half of which burned.
The blaze produced copious amounts of smoke. The Colorado State Patrol closed northbound C-470 at Morrison Road for a portion of Monday afternoon.
