DENVER — Colorado voters are headed to the polls today for local elections to decide issues such as sales taxes and term limits.
The Colorado Municipal League says voters in at least 134 cities and towns will be voting on candidates and local ballot measures.
Nine cities and towns that have sales or use tax measures on the ballot are Buena Vista, De Beque, Fruita, Garden City, Haxtun, Moffat, Morrison, New Castle and Woodland Park.
Fruita proposes to impose a 5 percent sales tax on the sale of medical marijuana. If the measure passes, Fruita will be the first city in the state to impose a tax on that product.
Nederland has a question on the ballot removing criminal penalties involving the possession of marijuana for persons older than 21, similar to a measure passed last fall in Breckenridge.
“These are important elections since they will decide the future direction of many of our smaller towns in Colorado,” said Sam Mamet, executive director of CML, which represents 264 communities across the state.
Mamet said Castle Rock wants to increase council terms from two years to four, and Morrison and Otis propose eliminating term limits.
New Castle has a charter amendment to publish various town documents on the town’s website rather than in the newspaper.
Gilcrest, meanwhile, is asking voter approval to operate a high speed Internet service.
Crestone is asking voters whether tavern licenses should be allowed in the town.
