Just a few weeks into the season, Cherry Creek (3-0) and Ponderosa (3-1) have emerged once again as top teams in Class 5A girls tennis. This match pits last year’s 5A champion (Cherry Creek) against the runner-up (Ponderosa), Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Pinery Country Club in Parker.

“Our matches with Ponderosa are always close,” said Cherry Creek coach Christin Jacob.

CHERRY CREEK BRUINS

Coached by Christin Jacob, our 2009 All-Colorado coach of the year. … Led by No. 1 singles player Caroline Schnell, a senior and a two-time state champion (No. 1 singles as a sophomore and No. 2 singles as a freshman). She’s 3-0 this year. … Keiko Kasho (1-0, No. 2 singles), a sophomore, is also back after finishing second at state in No. 3 singles last season. … Stephanie McCauley, a senior, pairs with Morgan Cohen, a freshman, on top doubles pair. They’re 3-0. McCauley was part of No. 1 doubles team that won state championship last season. … Lauren Broyhill was half of a state championship pair at No. 4 doubles. This season, she’s splitting her time between No. 3 doubles (2-0) and the No. 4 team (1-0).

PONDEROSA MUSTANGS

Led by No. 1 singles player Brittney Ricci (3-0), who finished third in No. 2 singles at state meet last season. … No. 2 singles player Kaley Carmichael (2-1), a senior, won the state’s No. 3 singles title last season. … Junior Emily Bol is 2-0 while playing on the team’s No. 1 doubles pair, and 1-0 on the No. 2 team. She was part of a pair that finished fourth in No. 2 doubles at state last season.
