WASHINGTON — The White House said Tuesday that it would consider canceling a visit by Afghan President Hamid Karzai if he continues to make troublesome remarks. Such a move would be a remarkable diplomatic slap likely to infuriate the mercurial leader.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs was referring to Karzai’s recent accusations that the United Nations and several nations interfered in Afghanistan’s fraud-tarnished presidential election last year.
Karzai has threatened to join the Taliban insurgency if the U.S. continues pressuring him to do more to end graft, cronyism and electoral fraud.
