PHOENIX—Authorities say a Phoenix man has been arrested for allegedly trying to defraud an elderly Colorado woman.

Phoenix police said Tuesday that 44-year-old Sullivan Kizzee III has been booked into jail on charges of forgery and fraudulent schemes.

Detectives say an 86-year-old woman in Pueblo, Colo., received a phone call on April 1 from a man who identified himself as a Chase Manhattan Bank employee. The caller told the woman that the bank had a 9/11 memorial fund and was distributing the funds to citizens.

The woman says the caller told her to withdraw $8,000 from her bank account and send the cash by courier to an address in Phoenix and the bank then would make an $800,000 deposit into her account.

The victim did so and later told her daughter, who notified Pueblo police who were able to stop the shipment. A Phoenix police officer then posed as a delivery agent for the courier service and delivered a fake package to Kizzee, who was arrested when he signed for it.
