British aviation authorities on Tuesday afternoon announced the opening of United Kingdom airspace beginning today.
An ash plume from an Icelandic volcano has grounded planes in Europe since Thursday.
British Airways and United Airlines each operate daily nonstop service between Denver International Airport and London’s Heathrow International airport. Those flights will resume today.
“We are certainly eager to resume our flight schedule,” said United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski. “Our main priority is to return to a partial schedule on Wednesday and a full schedule on Thursday.”
United restarted service Tuesday to Paris, Rome, Moscow and cities in Germany.
Lufthansa Airlines resumed service between Denver and Frankfurt on Monday.
The U.S. Travel Association estimates that cancellation of flights to the U.S. because of the volcano has cost the U.S. economy $650 million. Ann Schrader, The Denver Post
