CASPER — Citing death threats, the University of Wyoming says it should be able to bar 1960s radical William Ayers from speaking on campus for safety reasons.

The university filed court papers Saturday in response to a lawsuit challenging its refusal to rent its sports complex for a speech Wednesday by Ayers, an education professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

University attorneys submitted affidavits detailing death threats made against Ayers, university staff and alumni.

UW student Meg Lanker invited Ayers to speak after the university’s Social Justice Research Center canceled an appearance by him this month.
