University of Colorado tight end Riar Geer and Air Force defensive lineman Ben Garland are among the 19 undrafted rookies signed by the Broncos on Monday.
Those 19 players will join the Broncos’ nine draft picks for a rookies-only minicamp starting Friday. The list includes six players who play in the front seven, either at linebacker or on the defensive line.
Geer started 37 games in his career in Boulder and was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2009. Garland started every game for the Falcons and had 4.5 sacks in 2009.
Undrafted rookies have a difficult challenge in making any NFL team’s 53-man roster, but there is history in Denver showing it can happen. Nose tackle Chris Baker made the team out of training camp last year, and cornerback Tony Carter made the active roster by December.
Three undrafted players made the team in 2008, including linebacker Wesley Woodyard and tackle Tyler Polumbus, who have both played significant minutes over the past two years.
As many as eight of these new players could also make the Broncos’ practice squad.
