GREELEY, Colo.—Prosecutors have shown a jury a rifle they say was used in the death of a Greeley man who was shot 29 times.
Twenty-eight-year-old Cecil “Joe” Erb is charged with first-degree murder and other counts in the February 2009 slaying of Jeffery Watson Sr.
Prosecutors showed jurors the weapon on Monday.
Erb’s attorney says Erb fired in self-defense. The attorney claims Wilson had hit Erb in the face.
Prosecutors say Erb’s girlfriend was Watson’s ex-wife, and that he killed Watson to help her collect a $100,000 life insurance policy.
Erb was arrested in Iowa. Authorities say they found a rifle, ammunition, 23 spent shell casings, a black ski mask and other items in his car.
