DENVER—An officer who died months after he was injured during a gambling raid will be honored more than 72 years after he died.
Officer Jacob Benner’s name will be etched onto the Denver Police Department’s Memorial Monument located at the department’s downtown headquarters. Benner’s name will be among 13 names added to the monument Wednesday.
Police officials recently declared Benner as being killed in the line of duty. He suffered what appeared to be a minor leg injury when his foot went through a table during the raid in November 1937. Police say a blood vessel had ruptured and blood poisoning later set in.
Benner died more than three months after the raid on Feb. 14, 1938. He was 28 years old.
