LAFAYETTE — Coach Genny Horning can vividly remember the days when her Centaurus girls lacrosse team would get drubbed 20-0 by perennial state powerhouse Cherry Creek.

Thankfully for her and her players, it’s not like that anymore. Well, at least not usually.

Creek, ranked first in the state and winners of three of the last four state titles, brought back some bad memories for Centaurus in the first half Tuesday night before a second-half surge by the Warriors made the score respectable in a 16-10 Bruins’ victory at CHS.

Sixth-ranked Centaurus was just the third Colorado team this season to stay within 10 goals of undefeated Creek (12-0). And the Warriors took particular pleasure in outscoring the Bruins 7-4 in the second half.

“We came out slow, the way we used to be,” said Mariah Kline, who scored three goals for Centaurus Tuesday. “But I don’t care because we showed them how good we really are. If we see them again, they’re going to be really scared.”
