The youth of the New Dawn Center for Spiritual Living will be ministering to their elder brethren from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in their Aurora church at 1680 S. Chambers Road.
Wisdom may be for the aged, but technological savvy is concentrated among the young.
At the New Dawn Center, a community of more than 100 adherents of Science of Mind, pastors are putting eight teens to work at tech stations where other members, and the general public, can learn about their iPods, Facebook, Google and the bounty of downloadable applications for their cellphones.
“When I mention we have a Twitter site, most people in the congregation don’t know what I’m talking about,” said the Rev. Mark Gilbert. “We’ve been trying to promote our Facebook site for about two years.”
It’s not all about altruism for the teens. They are hoping to raise money — suggested minimum donation per tutorial is about $10 — for church camp.
Hailey Roodberg, a 16-year-old sophomore at Littleton High School, is one of the tech tutors.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Roodberg said. “I’ve already shown a lot of people how to do these things, so I’m not nervous at all.”
The Rev. Lisa Bair, youth pastor, said one of the event’s main goals is to provide the teens with a positive experience that builds their confidence and connects them with older church members.
The youths have separate Sunday services from adults, Bair said.
“What a great way for everybody to get to know each other,” Bair said. “And the kids can share and teach what they know and love.”
