Getting your player ready...

Nickie and Anthony Stout ride their bicycles everywhere. For everything. Commuting to work. Grocery shopping. Errands. Last year, the Stouts moved their household from an 800-square-foot apartment to their 1,800-squarefoot new house — about 5 miles, all via bicycle. Instead of a car, they use Yuba Mundo cargo bicycles.

Q: How did you decide not to use a moving van?

A: We’ve been car-free for about three years, and really love this lifestyle. We had a lot of inspiration from learning about other families who moved by bicycle and blogged about it.

Q: Was it your idea, or your husband’s?

A: Anthony has been car-free since college. He really wanted to do a bike move. I said, ‘If you can organize it, I’ll go along.’ He did a great job. We put out the word on our blog, and on moving day, people showed up and helped us out. We had at least a dozen riders.

Q: And you moved everything on one day?

A: We had one big moving day, and for two weeks before that, my husband, and a close friend, and I took trips after work between the apartment and the house. I strapped boxes to the sides of my cargo bike, and boxes to the trailer.

Q: Was it hard to move the sofa? Or the mattresses?

A: My husband built a trailer, 7 feet long, and 3 feet wide, and we loaded it up with boxes that braced the mattress. It wasn’t very heavy. The trailer can carry, I think, around 400 pounds.

Q: What was the heaviest thing you moved?

A: Probably our woodworking shop and metal shop tools. With that load, it didn’t look like you were carrying much, but they were really heavy.
