Denver police investigating a three-car accident near Interstate 70 and Havana Street this morning say a man fleeing the scene of the wreck returned, grabbed a backpack and then tossed it in a nearby pond as he walked away again.

There were no serious injuries in the accident, which happened around 7:30 a.m., Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

A man in one of the vehicles left the scene on foot but returned in short order to grab a backpack before leaving again. Police responding to the accident found the man, but said he didn’t have the backpack with him.

The man, who is being held for questioning, was carrying marijuana, Jackson said.

An officer who was looking for the man saw him throw the backpack into the pond, Jackson said. The officer also saw the man throw something else into the pond. The pack was fished from the pond.

The Denver Fire Department was called to the scene and its water team is helping police search for the other object.
