DENVER—Big box sporting goods retailer Sports Authority Inc. is launching a new store concept that would focus on selling higher-end footwear and apparel.
A new store under the S.A. Elite brand is set to open in Denver in August with about 25 to 30 employees. Sports Authority CEO David Campisi said Tuesday it would serve as a model for about 200 to 300 S.A. Elite stores that could open around the country over the next five to 10 years.
While the chain’s typical store is about 42,000 square feet, an S.A. Elite store would be 12,000 to 15,000 square feet. He says the S.A. Elite stores wouldn’t replace any Sports Authority stores.
Sports Authority is headquartered in Englewood, Colo.
