AURORA, Colo.—City attorneys want an Aurora man accused of shooting and killing his neighbor’s dog to face a felony charge.

They say they will ask county prosecutors to charge 68-year-old Craig Deering with aggravated animal cruelty.

Deering was arrested last week on misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals and discharging a weapon in the city.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office declined to comment because charges haven’t been filed.

Police say Deering killed the dog with a pellet gun. He told police that the dog previously attacked him and he shot it when it went into his yard.

The dog’s owner says Deering said nothing about her dog attacking him.

Deering is scheduled to be in court June 3.
