The mother of Kayleah Wilson released a statement today saying she didn’t know her daughter had been spending time with an 18-year-old man charged with sexually assaulting her.
Family friend Christopher Poskey released the statement today, saying that April Wilson did not know her daughter considered Robert Laurencio Montoya a boyfriend, but that when she did hear about a relationship she immediately put an end to it.
Montoya faces a charge of sexual assault on a child, a Class 4 felony, and sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse, a Class 3 felony. He was arrested Wednesday night and is being held on a $100,000 bond.
According to electronic copies of court records, investigators think Montoya started having sex with Kayleah last October.
Montoya is considered a person of interest in the disappearance and murder of Kayleah, 12, who vanished on March 28. Her body was found Wednesday morning in an irrigation ditch in southeast Greeley. The Weld County coroner determined she was a victim of homicide.
Poskey said the family is planning a memorial service for Monday morning for friends and family, and a news conference that afternoon. The exact time and location of the memorial has not been set.
“It seemed like she was overwhelmed,” he said. “She is doing her best to cope with all the emotions of the past couple of days. She needs time to gather her thoughts and to comprehend everything that has happened.”
Heavy rains may have dislodged Kayleah’s body Tuesday night, Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner said.
