State transportation officials plan to close all lanes of Interstate 25 near the West Alameda Avenue interchange overnight for up to five nights beginning tonight so workers can demolish the northern portion of the Alameda bridge over I-25.

The work is part of a $37.4 million project that is using federal stimulus funds to replace the Alameda bridge with a new, wider structure. The project also includes the widening of I-25 below the span.

Tonight and on subsequent nights, the Colorado Department of Transportation will impose double lane closures of both northbound and southbound I-25 near Alameda at 9 p.m. and a full closure of the interstate at 11 p.m.

Northbound I-25 will be closed at Broadway and southbound I-25 at Alameda. The ramp from eastbound West Sixth Avenue to southbound I-25 also will be closed. All will reopen at 5:30 a.m. the following day.

CDOT will detour motorists during the I-25 shutdown, but the agency warned of “major delays” and suggested “alternate routes are strongly advised.”
