ASPEN, Colo.—The doorknob of choice for homes in glitzy Aspen may come down to whether a bear can manipulate it to get inside.

The resort town is in prime black bear habitat and the animals roam through town looking for food in garbage cans and wherever they can get it. They take advantage of open doors and windows to rummage through houses in search of goodies.

Lever-style doorknobs are easier for bears to manipulate. State wildlife officials would like to see Aspen-area officials require round doorknobs, which are much tougher for bears to manage.

Local and state wildlife officers killed 20 bears in the area last year after the animals threatened people. Other bears were relocated.

Bear-resistant trash cans are required.
