AURORA — Mother Nature wrecked havoc Monday with the Class 5A girls golf state tournament.

The tournament’s first round was suspended at about 12:30 p.m. due to worsening wind conditions at the CommonGround Golf Course. All of the competitors had begun their opening rounds but none had completed 18 holes before officials from the Colorado Women’s Golf Association ruled the wind had grown too extreme to continue play.

The Colorado High School Activities Association still plans to complete the tournament today. The opening round will resume this morning at 6:50 a.m. Once the first round finally is complete, the course will be reset in hopes of beginning the second round at noon.

“The wind conditions basically made the course unplayable,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann. “The CWGA officials made that call on the course as the wind kept picking up and the conditions worsened. They just weren’t conducive to getting through this round.”
