FRISCO, Colo.—The Colorado district attorney who filed sexual assault charges against NBA superstar Kobe Bryant is petitioning for a spot on the ballot in a Republican legislative race.

Mark Hurlbert has submitted petitions with about 1,200 signatures to the secretary of state’s office, which will check their validity. He needs 1,000 signatures for a spot on the ballot in Colorado Senate District 16.

Hurlbert fell one vote short of making the ballot at last week’s GOP delegates’ meeting. He or Evergreen developer Tim Leonard will face Democrat Jeanne Nicholson.

Hurlbert is district attorney in Eagle County and three other mountain counties. He dropped the case against Bryant in 2004 when Bryant’s accuser said she didn’t want to participate in a trial.
