A Lakewood man was found guilty of second degree murder Wednesday for the shooting of his roommate last August.

Kalani Opani, 55, shot Roy Michael “Mike” Canavan, 46 after a day of drinking and arguing over music.

The argument turned into a small fight where Opani was slightly injured. After Canavan went to bed, Opani used a .40-caliber Desert Eagle semi-automatic handgun and shot Canavan once in the chest.

Opani called police to the home on West Arizona Avenue and South Ames Street to report the shooting. When police arrived, Canavan was already dead.

A third roommate was in the home, but was not injured.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 9. Opani faces up to 48 years in prison.
