GREELEY, Colo.—Holy Family won its first Class 3A baseball title Saturday, knocking off two-time defending champion Eaton 11-1 in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule.
Senior second baseman Josh Tinnon drove in three runs for the Tigers (24-2), who pounded out 15 hits and staked Cody Simmering to a big lead with a seven-run third inning that made it 9-1.
Simmering, a senior, used a sharp slider to keep the Reds (24-2) off-balance and limit them to four hits.
Both of Eaton’s losses this season came against the Tigers. Holy Family snapped the Reds’ state record 60-game win streak with a 19-14 win in the tournament’s third round on April 22.
