GREELEY, Colo.—A trial for a man suspected in a 1977 rape and killing in Greeley has been set for December.

A judge ruled this week that there is enough evidence to proceed with a first-degree murder charge against 51-year-old Marcello Maldonado-Perez. A trial is tentatively set to start Dec. 6.

Convenience store clerk Mary Pierce was abducted Aug. 25, 1977. Her body was found two days later in a cornfield west of Greeley. She had been raped and stabbed 17 times.

Investigators testified Thursday that bloodstains and DNA evidence tied the defendant to the attack, but defense attorney Derek Samuelson questioned whether the evidence could have held up over 33 years.
