A climber was badly injured this morning when a cornice broke and he was swept down the snowfield of the Hagerman Couloir, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Department.

Mountain Rescue Aspen reached the man, identified as 32-year-old Timothy Jansen of Lenexa, Kan., on a steep area and he was airlifted to Aspen Valley Hospital, then to a Denver hospital four and half hours after the fall.

His brother, Mark Jansen, 27, of Denver called for help on a cell phone, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Another group of climbers assisted in the rescue.

The coulier is on Hagerman Peak, a 13,632-foot mountain in the Elk Range, northwest of Snowmass Peak.
