Divers will resume their search Monday morning for the body of 25-year-old Indiana man who fell from an inner tube into the Cache la Poudre River Monday afternoon in Larimer County.
He had not been identified more than seven hours after he disappeared into the fast-flowing water near Picnic Rock. He was not wearing a life-preserver, according to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Department.
Searchers scoured a 6-mile stretch Sunday, but suspended their efforts at nightfall. They’ll go back over that length of river starting at 8 a.m., said sheriff’s department spokeswoman Kathy Messick.
“There is a lot of debris in the water. The water is not clear, and you can’t see through it,” Messick said. “It’s dangerous for the searchers.”
The man was riding tubes with three other friends when he went under the water just before 2 p.m.
The Poudre River, like most of the state’s waterways, was gorged with frigid waters from the spring snowmelt.
The river was flowing at nearly three times its normal pace for the date, 1,960 cubic feet per second. The 35-year mean flow for May 30 is 672 cfs, according to the U.S. Geological Survey for Colorado.High-water flows are expected on many of the state’s most popular rivers for the next few days, prompting safety and flood warnings from public officials in many locations today.
