BOULDER, Colo.—The brother of a popular Louisville resident killed after being struck by a car while picking up highway litter has pleaded guilty to taking money that was intended for the victim’s funeral.

John Bright entered the plea Tuesday and was sentenced to community service and a four-year deferred jail term. The 48-year-old said he doesn’t think he is guilty but entered the plea so his family didn’t have to go through a trial.

Prosecutors say Bright took $7,000 from the Boulder County Crime Victim Compensation Fund even though he had received some $12,700 in a memorial fund from his brother’s friends. Bright was ordered to return the county’s money.

Bright’s brother, 57-year-old John Breaux, was killed in January 2009.
