The Black Hawk Police Department said Tuesday that one of its officers, Sgt. Kenneth Lloyd, had been cleared of any improper action in the wounding casino robbery suspect Randy Steven Keesee in April.

The shooting was investigated by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and a task force made up of other law enforcement agencies, a standard procedure when an officer shoots someone.

“Sgt. Lloyd was justified in using physical force and even deadly deadly force against Keesee inasmuch as Sgt. Lloyd reasonably believed he was about to utilize deadly force against him,” Gilpin County District Attorney Scott Storey, who reviewed the case, said in a statement.

Keesee, 43, of Aurora was wounded after allegedly pointing a pistol at Lloyd in a casino parking garage in Black Hawk.

He is suspected of robbing Central City’s Famous Bonanza Casino of $28,000 two hours earlier.

The officer approached Keesee when he saw a yellow straw fedora similar to one that the robber was reportedly wearing. A bag with cash was found in the trunk of Keesee’s car, police said.

Keesee has been in the Gilpin County Jail on $1 million bond since his release from the hospital.
