Both Colorado participants in Scripps National Spelling Bee were eliminated in semifinal competition today.

David Phan, 13, of Longmont, sponsored by the Daily Camera was out in Round 4 after missing the word “bilophodont”

Brian King, 13, of Colorado Springs, sponsored by The Denver Post, correctly spelled “musteline” to advance to Round 5 with 31 other students this afternoon.

In Round 5, he misspelled “caprifig” and was eliminated.

Eighteen spellers advanced to Round 6.

The 48 semifinalists who started this morning came from the 273 competitors from across the U.S. and around the world who had gathered in Washington, D.C., for the three-day competition.

The champion will be crowned tonight. The finals will be aired live at 6 p.m. tonight on ABC.
