DENVER—Xcel Energy is trying to determine what caused an explosion at a power substation in east Denver that left about 31,000 customers without electricity.
At least one explosion rocked the substation at about 6:30 p.m. Monday. A fire that sent a black plume of smoke about 60 feet into the sky was quickly controlled.
Power was restored Monday night to about half of those without power.
Some patients in intensive care at Rose Medical Center were moved to other hospitals because backup generators provided limited power.
Xcel Energy spokesman Tom Henley says it could be midmorning before crews can assess the damage at the power substation. It’s unclear what caused the explosion.
Henley says eight circuits were damaged and crews are switching loads to restore power.
