Getting your player ready...

The Gunnison River has been designated Gold Medal trout fishing by the Colorado Wildlife Commission, part of only 168 miles of Colorado’s 9,000 miles of streams to carry such status. That means the waters are managed to ensure populations of large fish, and that means more fun for you fishermen (and women) looking to hook the big ones. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park offers not only the chance to do just that, but also 64,000 acres of recreation, including floating and rafting along that same gorgeous river, as well as hiking, rock climbing, camping, horseback riding or just driving the rim roads to catch a glimpse of the dramatic canyon walls. STAY: For a mix of rustic charm and casual motel drive-up ease for unloading gear, it’s hard to beat Country Lodge (1624 E. Main St., 970-249-4567, ) in Montrose, the gateway to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, about 15 minutes away. Spacious rooms have one or two beds, WiFi and a desk, most have microwave and refrigerator as well as patio doors that lead out to the heated pool (seasonal) and year-round hot tub. Rates start at $80 a night for one queen, $90 for two.

DINE: A good workout needs a good, hearty meal, preferably one packed with carbs. DeAngelo’s Pizza (435 S. Townsend Ave., 970-252-7499) delivers — literally, to all the area hotels — with its big, stuffed calzones and crispy-crusted, New York-style pizzas slicked with their sweet, homemade sauce and, even rarer, fresh dough. The staff is friendly and helpful, overseen by the also-friendly owner James Wilkinson, who can often be found on-site.
