Two people are in critical condition after their Subaru plunged into a retention pond at high speed and Englewood firefighters rescued them from their submerged vehicle.

The two unidentified people were headed westbound at 1:45 a.m. on Hampden Avenue when the driver lost control of the car and it careened into the pond just west of Broadway and north of Hampden.

The car flipped over and landed upside down in the pond, which is anywhere from 4 to 5 1/2 feet deep, said Jason Hehn, spokesman for the Englewood Fire Department. Only one of the rear tires and bumper were visible, Hehn said.

Firefighters and paramedics at a station at 555 W. Jefferson St., a few blocks away, responded within minutes, said Brad Johnson, spokesman for the Englewood Fire Department.

Two firefighters dove into the water and pulled the victims, who were unconscious and not breathing, out of the car through windows.

“The (firefighters) got in there and took care of business right away,” Johnson said. “They got people out of the Subaru and out of the pond onto the bank. They did a heck of a job.”

The victims were carried to the bank where they were resuscitated, Hehn said.

They were rushed to Swedish Hospital in Englewood, where they were in critical condition, Johnson said.

It was raining lightly at the time of the accident, which is under investigation by police, Hehn said.

The identities and gender of the victims were not available.
