DURANGO, Colo.—Mining operations at two gold mines in La Plata Canyon have been suspended until at least July 8 following state regulators’ rejection of the operator’s permit.

The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety this week denied a permit for Wildcat Mining Corp.’s Idaho mine in the canyon out of concerns about a road cut steeply down a hillside above the La Plata River.

The decision affects the company’s access to its Idaho and Mayday mines. Company officials can appeal the decision at the Mined Land Reclamation Board’s next meeting July 14.

The board issued a cease-and-desist order against Wildcat in February, saying it cut a road, dug the Mayday mine and built a mill without permits.
