A 45-year-old Federal Heights man died in a single vehicle crash early this morning in the Buffalo Creek area of Jefferson County.

The crash likely happened between midnight and about 6 a.m., said Trooper Nate Reid, a spokesman with the Colorado State Patrol.

The unidentified driver of a Ford van was heading north on Colorado Highway 126, about 13 miles south of U.S. Highway 285, when the van ran off the road and smashed into a tree, Reid said.

A passerby discovered the crash at about 7:10 a.m. and called 911. The state patrol withheld the man’s identification pending notification of his family.

Foggy conditions and wet roads may have contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.
