ELBERT COUNTY — Investigators say a 52-year-old teacher died of asphyxiation and are calling his death suspicious.

The teacher’s body was found in a field near County Road 194 and County Road 53 in Elbert County on Monday when it was spotted by a driver.

Elbert County Undersheriff Shayne Heap said Randy Wilson’s body was found near his car in the field and his cause of death was not connected to the car.

Wilson was visiting family in Bennett on Sunday night and left there around 10:45 p.m. He was last seen at a gas station.

His body had been in the field for at least 12 hours before he was found. That means his time of death was about an hour and a half after he was at the gas station.

The field where he was found is about 20 minutes from his home.

Deputies say there were objects found near him but would not release any other details.

Wilson taught physics and calculus for 10 years at Kiowa High School. He has five sons. His youngest just graduated from the high school.

He was a very popular teacher, according to Kiowa School District Superintendent Bret Robinson.

Robinson called Wilson a “good man.”

“Randy was a dedicated, loyal employee to the district. He put in hours and hours of extra service in the areas of helping kids with questions they might have, working extra hours, especially in our technology department.”

“He was the man who kept all of our computers running,” Robinson said.
