KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals placed former Fowler High School pitcher Luke Hochevar on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow.
Hochevar, the overall No. 1 choice in the 2006 draft, last pitched June 11 in Cincinnati, allowing four runs in four innings. He is 5-4 with a 4.96 ERA in 13 starts. His assignment to the DL is retroactive to June 12.
The Royals recalled Anthony Lerew from Triple-A Omaha; he will start tonight against the Astros.
Torrealba suspended
NEW YORK — Padres catcher Yorvit Torrealba was suspended for three games after making contact with umpire Larry Vanover during Monday’s 6-3 loss to Toronto.
Torrealba said he planned to appeal the penalty.
“Three days is way too much. I didn’t mean to touch him,” Torrealba said.
