BAGHDAD — The leader of a government-backed Sunni militia was killed in a bombing west of Baghdad on Wednesday, one in a series of attacks targeting Iraqi security forces and their allies.

The bomb that killed local Awakening Council leader Mohammed al-Hamdani and wounded a bodyguard was attached to a car and exploded in Hamdaniya, a village in the Abu Ghraib district, police and hospital officials said.

The Sunni militia groups, known as Awakening Councils, are frequently targeted by insurgents. The groups joined U.S. and Iraqi troops to fight al-Qaeda. The Associated Press
